A Look Back at the BLITZ AWARDS 2007

The Inverness Blitz Academy of American Football celebrated its eigth season on Saturday, 27 October 2007 by holding their annual awards ceremony at Culloden Academy. The ceremony which has attracted much praise in the past from local and national celebrities continued to impress with many innovative and exciting features and on top of that the Blitz is also well known for including sections of humour throughout the awards.

The show kicked off with Borat explaining the rules and etiquette of the BLITZ AWARDS in his own special style and with Borat the audience is never safe as he picked his way through them, interviewing and embarrassing  many of the celebrity presenters including Alan Hoseason of Coaching Highland, James Martin from Inverness Leisure and MFR presenter Tich McCooey. Borat remained in the audience to ensure that everyone adhered to his etiquette rules and the awards began with Euan Straiton picking up awards for best Wide Receiver, Most Improved Player and the Strength and conditioning award, Owen Moir won Best Quarterback under 16, Kenny Mackay, Best Quarterback over 16. Next up in a Star Wars style was the voice of Yoda to announce the Rookie of the season which went to Ian MacDonald, Euan Rennie then received both the Best Linebacker and Best Leader Award, Andrew MacIver won the Best Frontliner, in only his first season. To finish off the first half Dagmar Borrowman from Volunteering Highland presented Claudio Correa with the Volunteering Highland Award.

The second half opened in a lively fashion with Sam MacDonald winning the Best Cheerleader, Lewis Warburton collected the under 16 Defensive Back award with Callum Hickie receiving the over 16 Award, Andrew Skinner won Best Running Back under 16 and Angus MacKintosh received Best Running Back over 16 which was backed up with undoubtedly the best video compilation of clips from throughout the season.   The show was rounded off with Darren MacDonald who had already received the  Best Wide Receiver under 16 and the Strength and Conditioning under 16 awards, coming down to receive the  Player of the Season award which was presented by Tich McCooey a former member of the Ness Monsters American football team, this is the award that the Blitz bestows on the player who shows dedication both on and off the field.

Alan Hoseason coaching development officer from Coaching Highland commented during the presentation “I fully believe that the format, quality and the benefit of this event to the players, club and the wider sporting community is nothing short of incredible. Never have I been to an awards ceremony which is run with such professionalism and dedication, backed up by months of planning and organisation.”

The Blitz would like to thank everyone who helped to make this event so spectacular and special thanks go to the National Theatre of the Highlands, Culloden Academy for hosting the event, all the presenters and of course Borat. Pictures of Award winners now up in Media section.
